Hey y'all! Happy Leap Year!! This is so fun that we have one this year! I mean they only come once every four years, so we have to make the best of it right? I'm going to make the best of it by sharing some things that make me Leap for Joy this Leap Year!
1 Comment Hey y'all! Back from Hawaii, and had an absolutely fabulous time (I mean did you really have any doubt?) I posted endless pictures on Instagram, which you can certainly check out, but I'll just post some of the highlights here, including, most importantly for the purposes of this blog, some of the food:
Do y'all want to know more about the girl behind the blog? Want to have a few questions answered? Well my friend Kimm from Sweetness Catering in Washington (state) asked if I would do an interview for her blog and of course I jumped at it and said YES! as if she was proposing marriage or something... anyway, here is the link to the interview. Definitely check out the rest of Kimm's blog because I think she is just the Bees Knees. Hiiii everyone. It's Wednesday. AKA hump-day. Actually it's Wednesday night so I think hump-day is over but I work almost 7 days a week so I'm not even sure if I get a hump-day. Whatever, that is neither here nor there. Definitely not the point of this post. The point of this post is to show you something amazing that I found on Pinterest.
I told you about Pinterest in my last post...I'm mildly obsessed with it...okay totally obsessed with it, but it's okay, I'm admitting I have a problem... that's the first step to recovery...although I have no intention of recovering because Pinterest allows me to find things like THIS. Yes, I know...amazing, breathtaking, beautiful, simple organization. I was SO in love with the way these jars were labeled, I immediately went to Kristine's blog to find out how to do it. She gives a brilliant tutorial and includes free printables!!! I was so in love with the style, I basically followed it to a T (is it "to a T" or "to a Tea"?? what does that even mean??). I didn't want to use her printables, though, because I wanted to use these labels on umm pretty much everything, so I made my own, following the simply beautiful theme of dictionary definitions. (I also didn't want to use hers because they are from photoshop (which sadly I don't have) and the fonts are too and I would have an OCD coronary if 8 looked one way and the others looked different because the same fonts weren't available...I know, I may have more than one problem) Yesterday, my friend Marina had a birthday. I won't tell you how old she is but I'll tell you that she is definitely a glamour girl... a princess... a girl who loves to and deserved to party in style. So nothing felt more right than making her a glittery, girly, princess-y cake! I had been brainstorming for weeks. Planning and pinning the best ideas I had found and inspiration for what I wanted to create for her. If you don't know what I mean by pinning, here you go. You're welcome. {Don't blame me when you get addicted...just warning you}
Pinterest is the world's best internet site to find inspiration and amazing things. I had made a board with all of the best ideas I thought would fit her personality and be delicious as well. I decided to go with a few different ideas: Glitter, Bows, and Ombre. I used the recipe from Whisk Kid for a "White (but not really) Cake" which Sweetapolita also used for her amazing rainbow doodle cake. I then made all the layers different shades of purple. Basically I took the whole batter and weighed it on my scale, then determined that each layer (of 6) would be 9 3/4 oz and then it was easy to measure out each layer. I greased the pans and then did the first layer as white (real white, not off white...I used white Americolor gel to get the white layer perfectly white). Then after taking out the white layer and putting it in a 9in greased cake pan, I added in a little purple Americolor (these things are amazing) into the bowl (see below)...then measured out the next layer, added more purple and then did the next layer...and so on until I had done all 6 layers, the 6th layer being a deep purple. We have a winner folks! The lucky winner was Comment #50: See? Here's the #... I used Random.org like I said I would in the giveaway post :) Thank you so much to all who entered, and don't forget, you can always go to SimplyLobsters.com and order some fresh Maine lobsters yourselves! They have a huge variety, including just lobster tails so if you aren't quite comfortable just yet with killing one yourself, you can still enjoy lobster AND take baby steps! They also have specials so make sure to check their website! So I made some cookies to celebrate the giveaway ending! I used Sweetapolita's perfect sugar cookie recipe... it IS perfect and I suggest you use it, like I did for my holiday cookies. It is so great, I can't stop talking about it...and everything else she does because, let's face it, she's so incredible I can't believe she's a real person. I got some extra help from Bridget at Bake at 350 and Callye of The Sweet Adventures of Sugarbelle. They gave me some last minute tips on using Royal Icing and I am so grateful! I'm planning on continuing the Lobster theme for Valentine's Day and make these instead of hearts. I'm also planning to send a dozen or so to Don from Simply Lobsters for being so gracious to host this giveaway, I definitely couldn't have done it without him! (But shhh don't tell him there are cookies coming!) Below, I'll just give you a few photos and such, since the recipes aren't really mine :) I couldn't have done these lobster cookies (or anything else colorful for that matter without Americolor gels... they are amazing! Just a small amount and it totally saturates the icing (or whatever it is you are dyeing). As you can see in the middle photo it wasn't quite red enough for lobsters but that was only one squirt of the bottle! To the right you can se how intense that color gets! LOVE! Below you can see the lobster sugar cookies before they get all iced up! All you need is some sugar cookie dough and some cookie cutters. Use the colored royal icing to outline and flood the sugar cookies... then let them dry to harden. Store in an airtight container and they should last a couple of weeks! |
